Can AI Replace a Tutor? What Dubai Parents Should Know
7 min read 路 Updated October 2026
Your child asks ChatGPT to explain quadratic equations and gets a clear answer in five seconds. So why pay for a tutor? It's a fair question - and the honest answer is that AI and a tutor do genuinely different jobs. Here's where each one actually helps.
What AI Is Actually Good At
- Explaining a concept on demand. Stuck on a definition or a formula at 10pm? AI gives an instant explanation, no waiting for the next lesson.
- Generating practice questions. Need ten more algebra problems to drill a skill? AI produces them in seconds.
- A first pass on written work. AI can point out an unclear sentence or a grammar mistake in a draft essay.
- Breaking a big topic into smaller pieces. Useful for an overview before a deeper study session.
What AI Cannot Do
- Tell if your child actually understood. AI answers the question asked. It doesn't notice that a student has been faking understanding for three weeks because they're embarrassed to admit they're lost.
- See the exact mistake in their working. A tutor looking at a student's handwritten steps can spot precisely where a sign error or a misread question happened. AI only sees what's typed into it, which is rarely the full picture of how a student actually got to a wrong answer.
- Match the exact exam board and curriculum. IGCSE, IB, A-Level, French Bac, and CBSE each mark differently and expect different things in an answer. Generic AI explanations are often technically correct but not written the way a student needs to answer on that specific exam paper.
- Hold a child accountable. No fixed appointment, no one checking in - it's easy for a student to tell themselves they'll "ask AI later" and never actually revise.
- Build a long-term plan. A tutor tracks progress across weeks and adjusts the plan as exams approach. AI has no memory of last week's session unless you manually feed it the context every time.
So What Should You Actually Do?
Treat AI as a reference tool your child uses between lessons - to check an answer, to get unstuck on one specific step, or to generate extra practice. Keep a tutor for the parts AI can't do: diagnosing why a mistake keeps happening, adapting explanations to how your child specifically learns, and keeping them accountable to a weekly rhythm that actually leads to exam readiness.
The students who do best right now aren't the ones avoiding AI or the ones using it to skip the work - they're the ones using it as a tool while a tutor still does the teaching.
